Set up customer sign-in
Configure Shopify customer sign-in for orders and addresses in your app. Set up the Headless client ID, or publish without customer sign-in.
With customer sign-in, shoppers sign in to your app with their Shopify customer account. They can see their orders, manage their saved addresses and profile, and check out already signed in. Your app uses Shopify's own sign-in page, so shoppers get the same one-time email code they use on your online store.
Shopify doesn't let apps create the sign-in for you, so it takes a few minutes in your Shopify admin. You make the choice in Publish > Customer sign-in, and you must choose before you can publish: either turn sign-in on, or choose Publish without sign-in. Until you choose, Publish shows a Set up customer sign-in step.
Turn sign-in on
- In Shopify, open Settings > Customer accounts and make sure customer accounts are turned on. Shopify's older "legacy" customer accounts can't be used by apps.
- Install the Headless sales channel from the Shopify App Store. It is free and made by Shopify. (Source: Headless on the Shopify App Store.)
- In Headless, select Create storefront.
- Open Customer Account API > Manage. Edit Client type, choose
Public (mobile app)and save. Shopify then fills in the callback address your app uses. Leave it as it is. (Source: Shopify - Customer Account API getting started.) - Copy the Client ID and paste it into Publish > Customer sign-in, then select Turn on sign-in.
Vunda asks Shopify whether the client ID works for mobile sign-in in your store and shows Checked with Shopify when it does. If you see Shopify didn't accept this client ID for mobile sign-in, the usual cause is a client type still set to Public (web app), or a client ID copied from another storefront or store. Fix it in Shopify and check again. If you are sure it is right, you can Save anyway: the check is a best guess, not a guarantee from Shopify.
Customer sign-in Takes effect in your next app build. Shoppers see Sign in after they update the app.
Keep the Headless channel installed and don't delete its storefront or its client ID. Removing any of them turns sign-in off in your app. Vunda re-checks the client ID each day you open Publish and warns you if Shopify stops accepting it.
Publish without sign-in
If you choose Publish without sign-in, your app never shows a Sign in button. Shoppers can still browse, save a wishlist and check out as guests. The Account tab stays in your app, because it is where shoppers change their app preferences (usage analytics and notifications). It shows Manage your app preferences here. instead of a sign-in prompt.
Until sign-in is on, Vunda also holds back the options that only work for signed-in shoppers:
- The
Show account buttonswitch in your Header can't be turned on. - A sign-up form that sends shoppers to Shopify customers needs sign-in.
- Push audiences and flows that target Shopify customers stay off, because they can only reach signed-in shoppers.
You can turn sign-in on at any time, and it reaches shoppers with your next app build.
App Store review
If your app has sign-in, Apple asks for a way to test it. Shopify signs shoppers in with a one-time code sent by email, so give App Review the login of a test email inbox they can open, for example a Gmail account you create for this, in App Store Connect under App Review Information > Sign-In Information.
